The Austin Animal Center takes in hundreds of dogs yearly, for various reasons. They accept owner surrenders, they pick up strays all over the city, and even rescue puppies from puppy mills. Pit bull mixes in particular tend to stay in the shelters longer. Pitbull Pals partners with AAC to feature pit mixes that have either been in the shelter for a while, or have been returned to the shelter multiple times. In many cases these dogs are returned because of their high energy, and the owner's inability to dedicate adequate time to spend with them. The goal of Pitbull Pals is to help increase the likelihood of adoption for pit mixes, in hopes to destigmatize the breed and eventually see less pit mixes in shelters in Austin.
